Pembroke Welsh Corgis join the Vulnerable Breed List in the UK, but hold strong in the hearts of Americans

Corgis have captured the heart of the royal family, and even more so, the Internet. With their stubby legs, adorable nub tails and bat ears, it’s surprising to see them on the Vulnerable Breed List in Britain. Corgis can be found running all over the Internet in the form of cute memes and videos showing off their goofy personality and fluffy rear ends. The breed’s short legs and small size, along with their even temperament, make them a great companion pet.

Despite their royal and Internet fame, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi have joined its cousin, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, on this list of dogs who have less than 300 dogs registered per year. According to Britain’s Kennel Club, only 247 corgis were registered in 2014.

Pembroke Corgis have a long history in the royal family; they have always been Queen Elizabeth’s favorite pet since she was a child. The Queen has owned over 30 corgis since 1952. Her corgis were even part of her stunt with James Bond in the 2012 Olympics. Recently, she decided to no longer bring anymore corgis into her pack for fear of tripping (which at 88 years of age is a legitimate concern), but they will always be seen as a special part of her life.

But don’t fear – the Corgi lives on happily in the United States. Over here, their popularity is growing, and there is no need to worry about losing our fuzzy little friends. According to the AKC ranking of popular dogs breeds, the corgi ranks as the 24th most popular breed. They’re a versatile breed that has many purposes including house dog, working dog, and clown dog. So take a deep breath, put down “The End Is Near” sign and watch the cute Corgi compilation video below – this breed will be with us for many more years to keep us smiling!
